Theo Kgosinkwe

Theo Kgosinkwe was born on 15 August 1973 and grew up on the West Rand of Johannesburg. By his own admission, he never set out to become a singer. What he did set out to do was write, compose and create, and those instincts ultimately pulled him into one of the most enduring partnerships in South African popular music.

He co-founded Mafikizolo in 1996 alongside Nhlanhla Mafu and the late Tebogo Madingoane, a group whose name, meaning ‘new kids on the block’, was suggested by their producer after hearing their early demo. The self-titled debut album followed in 1997, with Music Revolution in 1999 and Gate Crashers in 2000, the latter becoming their best-selling release and cementing their status as one of the defining acts of the kwaito and Afro-pop era. Songs like Ndihamba Nawe, Kwela Kwela and Sibongile became ingrained in the South African cultural fabric in a way that few songs from that period have managed to match.

The group suffered a devastating blow on 14 February 2004 when Madingoane was shot and killed. Mafikizolo regrouped as a duo and continued, their resilience a testament to both the strength of the partnership and the depth of the music they believed they still had to make. The album Reunited, released in 2013, proved the decision right. The single Khona, featuring Uhuru, reached number one on the Afribiz Top 100 chart and number two on the Metro FM chart, introducing Mafikizolo to an entirely new generation of listeners and earning them international recognition across Africa and beyond. Love Potion followed as another major hit, and the duo collected MTV Africa Music Awards and multiple South African Music Awards, accumulating 14 SAMA wins in total across their career.

As a songwriter, Kgosinkwe's contribution extended well beyond his own recordings. He wrote extensively for other artists and in 2011 won the SAMA for Best Afro-Pop Album for his solo project I Am, demonstrating that his talent was never limited to the group context. The twelfth Mafikizolo studio album, Idwala, was released in August 2022, confirming that nearly three decades on, the music shows no signs of slowing.
