Steve Kekana was a celebrated South African singer, songwriter and musician who enjoyed more than 4 decades of musical success. Blind from the age of five, Kekana overcame significant challenges to become one of the country's most successful recording artists, renowned for his soulful voice, uplifting performances and enduring contribution to South African popular music. His work blended pop, soul, disco and Afro-pop, earning him a devoted following across Southern Africa and establishing him as an inspiration both on and off the stage. Born in Limpopo, Kekana developed an early passion for music and taught himself to play several instruments despite his visual impairment. He began recording professionally in the late 1970s and enjoyed immediate commercial success with a string of hit singles that crossed cultural and linguistic boundaries during a divided era in South Africa. Throughout his career, he released more than 40 albums, including Raising My Family, The Bushman, I’m in Love with a Beautiful Girl, Feel So Strong, The Winner and Thando Lwakho. His best known songs include Raising My Family, The Bushman, Shine on, Feel So Strong, I'm in Love with a Beautiful Girl and Together We Stand, many of which remain staples on South African radio. Kekana's achievements extended beyond music. He earned a law degree from the University of South Africa and became a passionate advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. His contribution to South African music was recognised with numerous honours, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the South African Music Awards in 2018, celebrating his remarkable influence on the country's entertainment industry. He also received recognition from organisations supporting disability rights for his lifelong advocacy and public service. Steve Kekana died in 2021 at the age of 62. Remembered for his resilience, optimism and extraordinary musical talent, he left behind a legacy of timeless songs that continue to inspire audiences across generations. His pioneering career and commitment to social inclusion secured his place as one of South Africa's most beloved musical icons.
