Soul Brothers are one of South Africa’s most iconic mbaqanga groups, formed in Durban in 1974 by keyboardist Moses Ngwenya and vocalist and drummer David Masondo. They emerged at a time when township music was developing rapidly, and they became central to defining the sound of modern mbaqanga, characterised by strong basslines, layered vocal harmonies and Ngwenya’s distinctive Hammond organ-led arrangements. Their breakthrough came in the mid to late 1970s with early hits such as Mshoza Wami and Mama Ka Sibongile, which helped establish them as a dominant force on South African radio. These songs captured everyday township life with warmth and relatability, while also offering a sound that was both danceable and emotionally grounded. Over the following decades, the Soul Brothers built an extensive catalogue, releasing numerous albums and becoming one of the most commercially successful groups in South African music history. Their most enduring songs include Intombi Yami and Idlozi, both of which remain widely played at cultural events and celebrations, and are often regarded as classics of the genre. Moses Ngwenya’s keyboard work became a signature element of their sound, while David Masondo’s vocals and drumming anchored their live performances and studio recordings. Together, they created a formula that influenced generations of mbaqanga artists. David Masondo passed away in 2015 at the age of 67, marking a significant turning point in the group’s history. After his death, Soul Brothers continued performing with new and existing members, with Moses Ngwenya carrying forward the band’s legacy as its key remaining founding figure. Ngwenya remained closely tied to the group, focusing on preserving and evolving its sound while maintaining its place in South African music culture. Today, Soul Brothers are regarded as pioneers who helped shape mbaqanga into a nationally and internationally recognised genre, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence contemporary South African music.
