Sherry Ray, born Sharon Rayton, was a South African singer who recorded during the early 1960s, a period when local artists were embracing the sounds of international pop and rock ’n’ roll.
Originally from East London, Ray recorded under the name Sherry Ray and became known for her version of Stupid Cupid, the popular song originally recorded by American singer Connie Francis. Her recordings captured the upbeat, youthful pop sound of the era.
In 1961, she released A Taste of Sherry, a 12-track album featuring songs such as The Gypsy, Moon River, Dream a Little Dream of Me and Teach Me Tonight. She also recorded A Night at the Windsor Bowl, accompanied by the Ellery Woodward band.
Although her recording career was relatively brief, Sherry Ray remains a small but intriguing part of South Africa’s early popular music history. Her recordings offer a glimpse into a time when local musicians were interpreting international hits and developing their own place in the country’s evolving music scene.
