S’fiso Ncwane was a highly influential South African gospel artist, remembered for a powerful voice that helped redefine the genre. Born in 1979 in Mthwalume on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, Ncwane discovered his passion for music at an early age, singing in church from the age of eight. Raised by his aunt after a difficult childhood, he taught himself to play several instruments and built a reputation performing at churches, weddings and community gatherings before entering the professional music industry. He released his debut album, Makadunyiswe, in 2001, beginning a recording career that would span more than 15 albums.

His defining breakthrough came with the 2010 album Kulungile Baba. The title track became one of the biggest gospel songs in South African history, selling hundreds of thousands of copies and remaining a staple on radio, in churches and at public gatherings. Other well-loved recordings included Baba Ngiyabonga, Phakama Nkosi Yezulu, Bayede Baba and Vula Amasango, all of which showcased his heartfelt worship style and distinctive vocal delivery.

Ncwane's success earned widespread recognition. He became the first gospel artist to win Record of the Year at the South African Music Awards in 2013 for Kulungile Baba, an achievement that highlighted gospel music's growing place in the country's mainstream music industry. Throughout his career he also collected numerous Crown Gospel Awards, Mzansi Gospel Awards and international recognition through the Africa Gospel Music Awards. Beyond music, he established the S’fiso Ncwane Bursary Foundation, supporting learners in disadvantaged communities through educational initiatives.

On 5 December 2016, S’fiso Ncwane passed away at the age of 37 after suffering kidney failure. His death shocked South Africa, prompting tributes from government leaders, fellow musicians and millions of fans. Although his life was cut short, his songs continue to inspire worshippers across the country, securing his legacy as one of South African gospel music's most celebrated and enduring voices.
