ProKid, born Linda Mkhize was a pioneering South African rapper, songwriter and performer who is widely regarded as a trailblazer in Kasi Rap. Hailing from Orlando West in Soweto, he transformed the local hip hop landscape by embracing township culture and rapping in Tsotsitaal, isiZulu, Xitsonga and other South African languages at a time when English dominated the genre. His authentic storytelling, lyrical skill and deep connection to township life earned him the nickname ‘The Number One Soweto Boy’ and established him as one of the country's most influential hip hop artists.

ProKid's breakthrough came after winning the YFM Tbo Touch MC Battle in 2004, a victory that launched his recording career. He released his acclaimed debut album, Heads & Tales, in 2005, followed by DNA in 2006, Dankie San in 2008, Snakes & Ladders in 2010 and Continua in 2012. Throughout his career he produced a string of popular hits including Soweto, Wozobona, Uthini Ngo Pro, Ghetto Science, Bhampa, Sekele and Wild West. His music celebrated township identity while addressing everyday struggles, ambition and perseverance.

Beyond his recordings, ProKid performed alongside international artists including 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes and became a respected mentor within the local music industry. Although he received numerous nominations and honours throughout his career, including recognition at the HYPE Awards and Channel O Music Video Awards, his greatest achievement was helping establish Kasi Rap as a respected and commercially successful genre. Following his passing, many leading artists, including AKA, Kwesta, K.O, Emtee and Big Zulu, credited him as a major influence on their careers.

ProKid died in Johannesburg on 8 August 2018 at the age of 37 after suffering complications related to a rare gastrointestinal condition. His legacy lives on through a catalogue of groundbreaking music that reshaped South African hip hop and inspired a new generation of artists to tell their stories in their own voices.
