Nico van Rensburg was one of South Africa’s respected traditional boeremusiek musicians, celebrated for his concertina playing, musical talent and unwavering commitment to preserving the country’s Afrikaans musical heritage.

Born in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, in 1937, Van Rensburg developed a career that would establish him as a prominent figure in the world of traditional boeremusiek. His dedication to the genre and his abilities as a bandleader earned him national recognition, helping to keep this distinctive South African musical tradition alive for generations of listeners.

A defining moment in his career came through the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) Boeremusiek Orchestra Competition. Van Rensburg achieved the distinction of winning the competition twice, in 1984 and again in 1990. During the competition’s history, which ran from 1980 to 1992, he was the only bandleader to win the title on two occasions, cementing his reputation as a leading figure in the genre.

His achievements extended beyond competition success. In 1999, Van Rensburg received a South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Boeremusiek Album for Legende, further recognising his contribution to traditional Afrikaans music.

Van Rensburg was also patron of the Boeremusiekgilde, reflecting his commitment to the preservation and promotion of the genre. He believed strongly in protecting the traditional character of boeremusiek, resisting modernisation that he felt might compromise its distinctive sound. His musical philosophy was rooted in respect for the foundations laid by earlier musicians, including the influential bandleader Hendrik Susan.

Beyond recordings and awards, Van Rensburg reached audiences through television appearances on Maak ’n Las and his work presenting the boeremusiek programme Skoffelklanke on Radio Pretoria.

Nico van Rensburg died on 12 May 2013, aged 76, at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria, following heart complications.

His legacy lives on through his recordings and his influence on the preservation of traditional boeremusiek, a uniquely South African musical heritage that continues to connect generations through rhythm, melody and dance.
