Louise Carver was born in Cape Town and came to music with a seriousness and discipline that belied her age. She began playing piano at the age of eleven and received her first recording contract at fifteen, matriculating at the Rustenburg School for Girls in 1996 before earning an honours degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Cape Town in 2002. The academic rigour and the musical career ran side by side, and both left their mark.
Signed at just fifteen, she released her debut single It Don't Matter, which quickly became a radio hit, followed by her acclaimed debut album Mirrors and Windows. It reached third position on the South African national charts and the album delivered another top ten hit in Fallen for You.
Her international breakthrough came through a collaboration with UK deep house producer Kenny Hawkes on Play the Game, which hit number one in Europe. Her success continued with I'd Say Yes, licensed by Sony UK, topping charts across Europe, Russia and South Africa. Her second studio album Silent Scream, produced by UK duo Tin Tin Out, featured hits including Empty Fantasy, Impossible Love and Harder Than I Thought, earning her a SAMA nomination.
Her 2010 release Look to the Edge featured the chart-topping single Warrior, with the music video airing on MTV Europe. She scored two Billboard number ones with US DJ Joe Bermudez on Sunrise and Crazy Enough. In 2015 she was named Glamour Magazine South Africa's Most Glamorous Woman.
Her seventh studio album Dark Secrets won the SAMA for Best Adult Contemporary Album after eleven previous nominations, an emotional career milestone. Across her career she has accumulated eleven South African Music Award nominations, two US Billboard number ones and sixteen top ten hits in South Africa. She holds dual South African and British citizenship and continues to perform and record, remaining one of the most enduring and distinctive voices in South African music.
