Kamogelo Makoma Jaydrean Mokoti was born in Soweto and grew up between Diepkloof and Fleurhof, where, at the age of ten, a neighbour with a home studio gave her the chance to step behind a microphone for the first time. That moment set everything in motion. She would go on to form a choir in Grade 7, study dramatic arts, and build a musical identity shaped by a listening diet that stretched from Lebo Mathosa and Brenda Fassie to Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Bob Marley, Eminem and Tupac, a range that explains the emotional breadth and stylistic confidence she brings to a genre that rewards both.

Known professionally as JayJayy, she has established herself as a compelling young amapiano vocalist. Her sound blends soul, trap and amapiano into something emotionally specific and immediately recognisable, rooted in Soweto but reaching considerably further. She has credited the people and stories of the township as central to her songwriting, drawing on witnessed experience and collective memory to give her lyrics a weight that belies her age.

Her profile rose significantly through high-profile collaborations. Her vocals featured on Art and Simplicity with Royal Musiq, Didiza alongside Shakes and Les and 031 Choppa, and Mama with Shoesmeister, all of which built her reputation as a vocalist who elevates any track she appears on. Her work with producer Mordecai on Ngeke nBelievee and Di Kgomo brought further chart success and millions of streams. The single Phesheya, released in late 2025, was described by JayJayy herself as a celebration of love that is close and real, the kind that makes you smile without realising it.

Her debut album Detour, released in 2026 through Gallo Record Company, marked her arrival as a fully formed recording artist rather than simply a featured voice. Romantic, introspective and emotionally honest, the album explores love, longing and self-discovery across tracks including Phesheya, Kancane Kancane, Ngiyagowa, Samba 8 and the standout Asixoxelane. By mid-2026 her single Marato Fela had surpassed two million streams, making it the sixth song in her catalogue to reach that milestone at just twenty years old.
