Holy Cross Choir

Holy Cross Choir is a South African gospel and choral group whose recorded legacy stretches back to the early 1990s and forms an important part of Gallo Record Company’s extensive gospel catalogue. Their music combines Christian devotional themes with the rich vocal traditions of South African choral music, and their recordings move between isiZulu, Sesotho and other South African languages.

One of their earliest documented releases is Umoya Wami, issued in 1991, followed by Lintswi in 1993. In 1994 they released Thapelo Ya Africa, a ten-track collection that included Thapelo Ya Afrika, Eya Jonase, Emelang Jesu and Sefapanong. The following years brought a prolific run of recordings, establishing Holy Cross Choir as a recognised name in South African gospel. Their 1996 album Ayikh' Indlela included several enduring recordings, among them Ayikh' Indlela, Uthando Lodwa, Siyathandaza and Siyakudumisa. The latter has remained one of their most streamed recordings and continues to introduce the choir to newer listeners.

Holy Cross Choir's catalogue expanded with albums including Ikhona Inyanga and E Teng Ngaka in 1998, Getshemane in 1999, Kukhon' Umthombo in 2000 and Mona Mona in 2001. Their longevity was recognised with 10 Years of Hits in 1997, while later compilations such as The Hits, released in 2006, and Ultimate Collection: Holy Cross Choir, released in 2014, have helped preserve their recordings for successive generations.

The choir has also been described as an award-winning South African choral group, although specific details of the award are not consistently documented in available sources. Its recordings have nevertheless achieved lasting recognition, appearing on South African gospel compilations and remaining in circulation through Gallo's extensive catalogue.
