Hennie Bekker

Hennie Bekker is a Zambian-born South African musician, composer, arranger and producer whose remarkable career has encompassed jazz, popular music, film, television, advertising, electronic music and ambient soundscapes. Born in 1934 in Nkana, in what was then Northern Rhodesia, Bekker grew up in Mufulira and developed an early fascination with both music and the sounds of the African landscape.

After moving to Johannesburg in the early 1960s, Bekker became an important figure in South Africa's recording industry. He formed and led several bands before joining Gallo Record Company, where he worked as a producer, arranger and musical director. His work during this period placed him at the heart of Johannesburg's vibrant recording scene, collaborating with a wide range of performers and contributing to the development of popular music in South Africa. His own recordings from this era include Turn On and Crunch.

Bekker's talents subsequently took him beyond South Africa. He spent time in London working as an arranger, conductor and producer before returning to South Africa, where he became heavily involved in composing music for film, television, radio and advertising. His work in commercial music was extensive, reportedly including hundreds of radio and television jingles.

In 1987, Bekker moved to Canada, where his career took an unexpected new direction. He became internationally recognised for his atmospheric and contemporary instrumental music, particularly through his work with Dan Gibson's Solitudes series. He contributed to numerous albums in the series, combining synthesised and acoustic instrumentation with recordings of nature. His own subsequent releases included the Tranquility, Kaleidoscopes and African Tapestries series, drawing on African musical influences alongside ambient and electronic textures.

Bekker also explored electronic dance music as a member of the Canadian group BKS. Their recording Astroplane won the Juno Award for Best Dance Recording in 1997. His career is notable for its extraordinary breadth. From the Johannesburg studios of Gallo to international ambient music and award-winning electronic dance, Hennie Bekker has spent more than six decades moving between musical worlds while retaining a strong connection to the African sounds that shaped his earliest work.
