Gene Rockwell, born Gert Smit on 27 December 1944 in Krugersdorp, was one of South Africa's most recognisable popular singers of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. He discovered his talent early, winning a talent competition in Durban at the age of 15. While still a teenager, he formed The Blue Angels, later renamed The Falcons, a Durban-based band that became a popular fixture on the city's dance circuit. Rockwell sang and played guitar, developing the gritty, blues-influenced vocal style that would become one of his trademarks.

By the mid-1960s, Rockwell had embarked on a solo career. His 1965 recording of Heart became a defining success, going directly to the top of the LM Radio Top 20 and establishing him as a major South African recording artist. Other notable recordings from the period included Ciao, Cold Cold Heart and Will You Love Me Tomorrow. His repertoire reflected the musical diversity of the era, moving comfortably between pop, rock, blues and country.

Rockwell subsequently became particularly associated with country music, recording a substantial catalogue for Gallo Record Company. Albums including Rosie, A Little More Like Me, Just for You and Lifetime Guarantee demonstrated his versatility and his ability to interpret both country standards and contemporary popular songs.

He also recorded with fellow South African singer Joanna Field, releasing the album You and I in 1983. Faith became increasingly prominent in Rockwell's later recordings. His gospel material included songs such as My Life's in Good Hands, Why Me Lord?, Whispering Hope and Just a Closer Walk With Thee. His 1998 album Songs of Faith + Hope reflected this spiritual direction and was released in the year of his death.

Rockwell died of cancer on 3 July 1998, aged 53. His extensive Gallo catalogue, spanning more than three decades, has continued to circulate through compilations and digital reissues. Today, he is remembered as one of the distinctive voices of South African country and popular music, particularly for the enduring appeal of Heart and his contribution to the country's early recording industry.
