Danny Mashinini

Danny Mashinini was a South African bubblegum and synth-pop artist who rose to prominence in the late 1980s. Born with the surname Masemane, he hailed from Zebediela in what is now Limpopo Province. Working under the stewardship of producer Tom Vuma, the same creative force behind the careers of Steve Kekana and Supa Frika.

Mashinini recorded for Tom Vuma's Miracle Music label, with releases distributed through EMI South Africa. His self-titled debut album appeared in 1988, followed by Georgina in 1990, both recorded at Delarey Studios. The records showcase a vivid mix of danceable Afro-synth grooves and socially rooted lyrics: tracks like 'No Money, No Survival and Ke TSotsi touch on the realities of migrant labour, crime and everyday township life, while the irresistible title track Georgina drives a frantic call-and-response chorus.

Though he never achieved the household-name status of Kekana, Mashinini's work is now regarded by collectors and crate-diggers as a high-water mark of South African bubblegum-era production. Both albums have become sought-after vinyl rarities.
