Caiphus Semenya

Caiphus Semenya is undeniably one of South Africa's most accomplished composers, arrangers and musicians, whose career has spanned more than six decades and left an indelible mark on African and international music. Born Caiphus Katse Semenya in 1939 in Alexandra, Johannesburg, he developed a passion for music at an early age and formed his first band, the Katzenjammer Kids, while attending school in Benoni. His career gathered momentum when he joined the cast of the landmark musical King Kong, where he met fellow singer Letta Mbulu, who would later become his wife and lifelong musical collaborator.

In 1964, Semenya left South Africa for the United States during the apartheid era, embarking on nearly three decades in exile. Settling in Los Angeles, he established himself as an internationally respected composer, arranger and musical director. Over the years he worked alongside some of the world's biggest names, including Quincy Jones, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Harry Belafonte and Nina Simone. His compositions and arrangements formed part of the acclaimed soundtrack to the television series Roots, which received an Emmy Award, while his contribution to the score of The Color Purple earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score alongside the film's composing team. He also contributed African musical elements to projects including Bad, which featured the song Liberian Girl.

Although much of his work took place behind the scenes, Semenya also enjoyed success as a recording artist with albums including Streams Today Rivers Tomorrow, Listen to the Wind and Woman Got a Right to Be. Among his best-known songs are Angelina, Matswale and Nomalizo, many of them recorded alongside Letta Mbulu. His distinctive fusion of jazz, African rhythms and sophisticated orchestration has influenced generations of musicians both in South Africa and abroad.

Following the end of apartheid, Semenya returned to South Africa in 1991 and continued to compose, perform and mentor emerging artists. In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to music, he and Letta Mbulu received honorary doctorates from the University of South Africa in 2013, while he was honoured with the Arts & Culture Trust Lifetime Achievement Award for Music and the South African Afro Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. Widely regarded as one of South Africa's greatest musical architects, Caiphus Semenya's legacy extends far beyond his own recordings, with his compositions and arrangements helping to shape the sound of African music on the global stage.
