Bongani Fassie

Bongani Fassie is a South African musician, producer, songwriter and television personality whose career has been shaped by both his own musical talent and the remarkable legacy of his late mother, the legendary Brenda Fassie. Born on 26 August 1985, Bongani was immersed in music from an early age. His father, Dumisani Ngubeni, was a member of Brenda and the Big Dudes, making music a defining part of his upbringing.

Showing exceptional promise, Bongani released his debut solo album, African Boy, when he was just ten years old, demonstrating his abilities as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, playing piano, drums, guitar and congas. As his career evolved, Bongani became widely recognised as ‘Bongz’, one of the founding members and principal producers of the award-winning South African hip hop group Jozi. Alongside fellow members Da L.E.S and Ishmael Morabe, he helped produce a string of commercially successful albums that blended hip hop with distinctly South African sounds.

Beyond Jozi, he has collaborated with artists including ProKid, Maggz, PdotO, iFani, Fifi Cooper and Dee Traits, while continuing to build a reputation as a skilled producer and songwriter across multiple genres. More recently, he has returned to recording with music that reflects themes of redemption, faith and personal growth.

Throughout his career, Bongani has also worked to preserve and celebrate Brenda Fassie's musical legacy, overseeing projects that honour her contribution to South African music while establishing his own identity as an artist. His work has extended beyond music into reality television through programmes including Finding Bongani and I Blew It, where he candidly discussed his struggles with addiction, financial hardship and recovery. His openness has earned respect for highlighting the challenges faced by many artists behind the scenes.

Although much of Jozi's success was recognised collectively through industry accolades, Bongani's influence as a producer and performer has made him an important figure in South African hip hop. Today, he continues to create new music through his label, Fassie Records, balancing his mother's enduring legacy with a renewed focus on his own artistic journey and contribution to the country's contemporary music landscape.
