Arno Carstens

Arno Carstens was born in 1972 in Worcester in the Western Cape, and grew up to become one of the most distinctive and enduring voices in South African rock music. He began writing music as a teenager and in the mid-1990s co-founded the Springbok Nude Girls in Stellenbosch, a volatile, genre-defying alternative rock outfit that would define an era of South African music with its fearless rock sound. Known affectionately to their devoted following as the Nudies, the band built a reputation as one of the most electrifying live acts the country had ever produced, releasing five studio albums between 1994 and 2001 before going on extended hiatus, reuniting in 2006 with the album PeaceBreaker and continuing to record and perform since, with Partypocalypse released in 2022. Across the Springbok Nude Girls career, Carstens accumulated eight South African Music Awards with the band.

His solo career proved equally celebrated. His multiplatinum 2003 debut Another Universe won the SAMA for Best Rock Album and its title track remains one of the most enduring songs in South African music history. The Hello Goodbye Boys in 2005 won Best English Adult Contemporary Album at the SAMAs. His debut UK album Wonderful Wild in 2010 was produced by the legendary Youth of The Verve's Urban Hymns fame and earned significant radio play across Europe. Atari Gala, released in 2012 on Gallo Record Company and produced with Brendan Jury, was his tenth studio album, its title drawn from a Japanese phrase implying both warning cry and celebration, written in part across New York, London, Johannesburg and Cape Town. The album includes standout tracks Two Dogs, No Ordinary Hero and Battlescars Galactica. Lightning Prevails followed in 2014, Die Aandblom 13 in 2016 was a deeply personal Afrikaans album paying homage to his upbringing and Out of the Light into the Night in 2021 was released independently. In 2024 he released the EP Sewe Sakke Hoop and the single Hoe Gaan Dit, with Sprokie appearing in 2025, confirming that his creative restlessness shows no sign of diminishing.

Beyond music, Carstens has built a parallel career as a fine artist working in oil on canvas, surrealism and digital art, with his first solo exhibition at The Lovell Gallery in Woodstock in 2012 and his work now selling internationally. He has shared stages with U2, The Rolling Stones and REM, and performed at Glastonbury, the Isle of Wight Festival, V Festival and T in the Park.
